AMATOR {Latin} - lover; friend, devotee; enthusiastic admirer/pursuerMONTUM {Latin} - of the mountains"Lover of the Mountains"From the seasoned mountaineer to the weekend warrior and city explorers, from a child’s excited chatter to an elders’ reflections, there exists a Universal experience in response to the Eastern Sierra: this particular region resonates deeply with the human spirit. A resonance that often transcends words or initial understanding. Here lies a shared sense of awe and love for the rugged peaks and extreme landscapes. But beyond this general connection, our own story and journey informs a deeper symbolism and interpretation of the mountains. Just as in the way we love, communicate and translate the world varies to great extremes, so too does the way in which we in experience, translate and interact with the mountains. And yet, the deeper emotional and spiritual connection to these sacred places is rarely explored. The mountains play many roles: they can inspire, confront, invoke life, bring death, heal, trap, nurture, deplete, liberate. Ultimately, the meaning of the mountain lies with the beholder.Psychospiritual counselor Mateo Sol describes a mystical experience “like a flash of truth that releases you from your limited sense of self and gives you a taste of reality that somehow feels more real. The very nature of mystical experience is its transience. Eventually you end up returning back to your habitual way of life, but the experience changes something deep inside.“ Could the same not be said for so many personal encounters individuals have with and in the mountains? And if this is the case, cannot much of our connection with the mountain be, therefore, mystical?Much like the volcanic, gaseous and geothermal landscape surrounding us, there exists a powerful world beneath the surface of our diverse spiritual connections to the mountains. In AMATOR MONTUM, video artist Amara Untermeyer creates visual poetics from this transcended feeling and mysticism through floating black & white camera work, candid audio recordings with Eastern Sierra residents and found or loaned archival footage of our mountainous region. With a non-linear visual style assembled from human-centered cinematography and candid audio recordings, Amara is interested in visually examining how we as mountain locals move through our mountain landscape, specifically from a spiritual and mystical approach; a lens less explored within our community, and our national culture in general.ARTIST STATEMENTFrom the moment I encountered the Eastern Sierra, I felt a palpable sense of Spirit that was unnamable. The more time spent in the mountains further informed specific roles this Spirit has played for my - my evolution as an artist, an outdoors-woman and my sense of purpose. The Eastern Sierra and its rugged landscape has been many things to me over the years; Mother, Lover, Challenger, Therapist, Playmate, Deity, Temptress and Muse, to name a few.As a visual artist and storyteller, I have been deeply touched by California’s Eastern Sierra and the local communities. AMATOR MONTUM is a provocation and deep dive into our own unique spiritual languages with the mountain and the profound ways we can continue interacting with this achingly captivating region. With this work, I hope to present the community with the opportunity for deeper connection with self and Spirit, while broadening the connections and diverse spiritual dialogue within the community. AMATOR MONTUM is a my deeply personal invitation to go deeper with ourselves, each other and with this sacred land.

LETTER FROM HAITI : Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti Thank you to NMAP and The Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti. Direction, Concept, Copy, Editing - Amara Untermeyer + Dan Ramirez. When we were asked to tell the story of how the UN introduced cholera to Haiti we were stumped on the creative front. We turned to Haitians, heard their frustrations, demands, and put those thoughts on paper. To keep all of those thoughts concise we used titling, music pacing, and contrasted the hurt Haitians are facing with the beautiful images captured on the ground.
